My review of The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.2.5 stars

Fast_FuriousI really liked the first Fast and the Furious. It’s one of my guilty pleasure movies, frankly it’s just a lot of fun to watch. The first sequel 2 Fast 2 Furious couldn’t hold a candle to the original, but there was still a certain fun factor to it. I feel like Tokyo Drift further slides down the sequel disposal.

My biggest issue was with the presentation of drifting. Drifting is like dancing, it’s not about getting from point A to point B, it’s about the style. Drifting is a judged sport, and getting to the finish line first doesn’t mean shit. This is a major flaw of the movie. Time and time again we are presented with a race where these drift cars are racing to get to the finish line, and sliding around the corners is presented as the fastest way to do this.

Secondly, I felt as thought the plot and characters were even weaker than the previous movies, and even the real stars of the movie (the cars of course) didn’t really have a whole lot of face time.

I hope this isn’t the end of the franchise. I, for one, would like to see Vin Diesel return to his roll and continue the story from the end of the first movie. From his guest appearance at the end of Tokyo Drift I can only assume that he hasn’t spurned the franchise.
