iPhone thoughts

Apple introduced the long awaited iPhone yesterday. I have to admit that as I saw read the report coming through as it was announced I wasn’t impressed. That’s not to say that I was disappointed, everything that I heard was on target, however, I was expecting a amazing leap.

Of course that was until I checked out the iPhone demos on apple.com. On second thought this is an amazing leap. This is truly iPod version 2, with a whole lot of other great stuff piled in there too.

Now I only have a few complaints. First, I’m sure there are many people out there who only want the iPod portions of this device. I have a new(ish) Razr on Verizon’s network, and I’m not planning to buy a new phone (or switch networks) for 18 months (or more). Pull out the wifi and cell electronics and give me everything else in a smaller, thinner package. I’m sure it’s coming, but probably not until the summer. Second, and this is related to the first, price. $499 for the base model is steep, perhaps you can get a discount for signing a two year contract ($249 sounds about right).

On a closing note, has anyone noticed that the iPhone may be a closer cousin to the Newton than the iPod?
