My review of the ewa-marine camera housing.2.0 stars

Underwater BagFor our trip to St. Lucia I wanted to get an underwater case for one of our cameras. A good case for Cara’s Canon Rebel runs $1200 or more, so I started looking for something a little less expensive. I ran across the ewa-marine u-mm, which looks like a great solution.

Unfortunately, it’s not a great solution. The product quality is good, and I had no fears about taking my camera underwater. There are a two main issues:

First, access to controls. Although hitting the shutter button was easy, turning the camera on, and many other controls were difficult to use through the bag. I had problems with both of the Fuji cameras. The cameras would tend to go into power-save mode (and were almost impossible to wake while in the bag).

Second, pressure. No fault of the bag, but at anything more than a few feet, the pressure pushing on the camera is so great that it actually kinked the lens so it couldn’t focus. If you have a fixed lens camera this probably isn’t as much of a problem, although I don’t know how much pressure the average camera can take.

The bottom line is that you’re better off spending a bit more on a hard case for your camera. If you can’t find one for your camera, you’re better off selling your camera and buying one that does have a hard case available for it. You’ll be happier in the long-run.
