The baby is here… no really!

Posted: March 28, 2009 in Baby, General

I really wanted to write a post about the long saga of Zachary’s birth, but at this rate it may never happen (or at least it will never be posted here). Instead I’ll write a quick summary of events.

Cara woke me shortly after midnight Friday March 20. She had been having contractions for the last 30 minutes. We talked to the doctor and he suggested we head over to the hospital. We did so, and the contractions got intense and very painful.

Although Cara wanted to do this naturally without drugs, she finally gave in and had an epidural. This was a good move, because after some discussion due to Zachary not doing what he should, it was decided that Cara would need a C-section.

Zachary was born at 8:00 AM on Friday, March 20, 2009. The whisked him away while we were still in the OR (I did hold him for about 60 seconds). Cara was wheeled into recovery and I got news that Zachary wasn’t doing great. He has a Pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and Pneumonitis (liquid in the lungs) due to Meconium Aspiration.

The recovery was long and hard. He was given pressurized 100% oxygen for several days, and antibiotics for a week. In the end he recovered well and was sent home in time to celebrate his one week birthday at home.

He’s a good baby (I think), and seems to be pretty peaceful. We’ll see how long that lasts!

Congrats to you both – good thing he looks like your wife (had to say that “classic” line). Enjoy parenthood!
