Maybe they should have used the rest of the chicken

Last night John, Justin, Theresa, Brian, Ben, and I went to Mohegan Sun to see Chickenfoot. Anyone who knows me knows that I’m a fan of Hagar (and Michael Anthony too). Take Hagar and Anthony and throw in Chad Smith from the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Joe Satriani and you should have an amazing band… at least that’s the idea. I bought the Chickenfoot album with high hopes, and although the album is decent, it’s not very memorable. I expected more out of a live concert.

Sure, it’s expected that Chickenfoot would play stuff from the album regardless of how good that music is. Wisely they did that first, and my heart was lifted when Sammy said “this is the last song… of the first part of the show”. From there they would be breaking into non-Chickenfoot music… which they did. The problem is that there is a serious catalog of hits that the band could pull from. With half of Van Halen on stage, you would expect something. Or if not Van Halen, perhaps some of Sammy’s solo stuff like “I can’t drive 55”, “Heavy Metal”, or a handful of other recognizable tunes. I expected Satriani to bust out some Surfing with the Alien and do some serious soloing.

No… none of that. What did they do for the second part of the show? They played some Montrose “Bad Motor Scooter” and Deep Purple “Highway Star”. That’s it… two songs.

These guys showed a lot of talent (to be expected), and I do have high hopes for the future of Chickenfoot, but this is disappointing to say the least, and it pains me to admit it since I’m a fan of every single member of this band.

Better luck next time guys…
