See ya Steve

With everything going on in the world, it might seem silly to make note of Steve Jobs stepping down as CEO of Apple. The fact is though, this is a man, who’s leadership took a company 90 days from bankruptcy to one of the most powerful companies in the world in just under fifteen years.

I don’t doubt there are better people in the world than Steve, certainly more moral and more selfless, however as a geek (and Apple lover since the 1980’s), Steve is a celebrity and a great man.

Reading the book “Good to Great”, I realized that Apple was probably a “good” not a “great” company, although the next five years may prove me wrong. The question is, can Apple be the same company going forward as it was under Steve’s eye? Probably not, maybe it doesn’t need to be.

The fact is, nothing Apple is doing (or has done) has really been amazing. There’s always been a sense of evolution with the products. What Apple shines at, is nailing the implementation though. Steven infused Apple with the idea that you always provide a solid product, you don’t cut corners, and most importantly, a product is not sold on features, it’s sold on the experience. “Real artists ship”.

Of course Steve isn’t totally out, he’s not dead (yet), he just won’t be running the day-to-day operations of the company. I don’t think Jobs can walk away from Apple, I think he loves having his fingers in that pie too much (and who can blame him).
