In a followup to my complaint about MPG and how Hybrids don’t make financial sense, there’s an aspect to the argument that I didn’t cover which is environmental impact.

Of course our current “lineup” of vehicles is not great for the environment. Driving my Subaru 15k miles each year puts 9.3 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere. The Jeep is worse at 12.4 tons, and the Lotus is even worse at 13.3 tons (I drive the Jeep only about 500 miles a year, so my actual impact is closer to 0.4 tons, and the Lotus doesn’t drive right now, but would have a similar impact). Cara’s Corolla puts a meager 6.5 tons into the air (find your own car at http://www.fueleconomy.gov/). I care about the environment, and I know that my 9.3 tons is nothing compared to most SUVs and larger vehicles, but I’ll admit that 9.3 is pretty high (even though a newer WRX shaves about half a ton off of that).

Last October, on my way into work, I was pulled over for “driving too fast for conditions”, a $127 fine. Instead of paying the fine I decided to fight it, because I thought that I was in the right. In the end, it really doesn’t matter.

I suppose anyone who decides to fight an infraction (or even anything larger) feels someone entitled. You’ve been wronged and you expect to be heard. I walked into court the first time, knowing that this was the preface to real court. I’d been here before, they offer a lower fine in the hope that you’ll plead guilty and leave. I didn’t. I held my ground, told them that “it wasn’t about the money”, especially since they offered to knock my fine down to $60. I left red faced (I don’t deal well with situations like that), and frustrated, but the writing was on the wall.

Project Progress

The last two weekends have been pretty productive. I finally took the time to properly wire up the accessories in the Jeep. My lights have been mounted on the roof rack for well over six years, but never wired. The air compressor has been mounted in the back for three years and not wired.

This weekend I installed my JCR Offroad Stage 2 Rock Sliders for XJ and I thought I’d share my thoughts since JCR is a fairly small shop and there probably aren’t many reviews online for their products.

The Wave

Posted: August 10, 2009 in Automotive, Jeep, Subaru

Simply buying a car can put you into a club with others owning the same car. I was thinking today, after getting a wave from a fellow WRX owner, what are the deciding factors that establish the need (or want) to wave to someone else. If you’ve bought a Corolla you’re not going to be waving to others that own Corollas.

So what makes a car “wavable”? I’ve driven three vehicles that were “wavable”:

  • 1996 Jeep Wrangler
  • 1997 Jeep Cherokee (normally not wavable, but mine is because it’s lifted)
  • 2005 Impreza WRX (although the base model Impreza is not wavable)

My evil plan is commencing!

Posted: May 25, 2009 in Automotive

Justin mentioned to me back in April that he thought it might be fun (albeit a little insane) to do an offroading trip on his wedding day in June. Since I am the king of crazy ideas, I’ve taken the flag, and have been pushing to try to make this happen.

That's so hot!

You can see the status of the stock radiatorOn the subject of Jeep repairs (and my ongoing task of trying to finally get the Jeep running well), I dove into my next big task today, replacing the cooling system. As you can see (from the picture), a healthy percentage of the fins are missing (looks to be maybe 15% of the radiator is gone).
